Fanwork Details:

Relevant experience/background:
I have been beta reading for fanfic since 2004. I have beta read fics in various fandoms, including Tolkien (LOTR and The Silmarillion specifically), X-Men, the MCU, the Vorkosigan Saga, Dead Boy Detectives (Netflix), and The Sandman (Netflix).

Outside of fandom, I was an editorial assistant for an academic journal for two years and won two awards on the strength of my research and writing in 2019–20. I also co-authored an article/practical guide published by a national association for professional historians.

Additional notes about labor offered:
You can view recent works I've beta read in the collection "Beta Read by Becca" on AO3 (https://archiveofourown.org/collections/BeccaBetaReads).

Characters/pairings of interest:
I'm happy to beta read works with only canon characters/pairings as well as works that focus on original characters or OC ships that do not disrupt established canon ships (i.e. Payneland, Aragorn/Arwen, etc).

Subjects/theme/tropes of interest:
Of particular interest for DBD:
- found family (esp. the core four)
- PTSD and working through trauma (esp. as relates to family of origin, i.e. Charles, Monty)
- the supernatural ecosystem (i.e. other ghosts not looking to move on, the Afterlife Department, the supernatural business and/or social scenes in London and beyond...)
- other magical or mythological creatures and objects (both "real" or invented)

And for Tolkien (in roughly chronological order):
- the Edain and other Men
- the Peredhil
- Athrabeth Finrod ah Andreth; philosophy in general
- Gondor, esp. Dol Amroth & internal politics (i.e. varying opinions on King Elessar)
- ethnic/racial tension between the Dúnedain and other Men

I am happy to beta read fics that focus on other things too!

Unwilling to address:
- Abusive romantic relationships
- Explicit and/or nonconsensual sexual scenes

I am open to fics that allude to these themes. If your does, please reach out so we are on the same page before you bid. Thank you!

Other notes:
I love beta reading, and I look forward to hopefully working with you! Here is what to expect:

  1. We'll touch base about what specifically you'd like me to look for while beta reading (i.e. SPaG, characterization, plot; should I flag big-picture concepts with room for improvement; etc).

  2. You'll share your fic via Google/OneDrive link (with commenting/suggesting permissions enabled) or as a file (.doc or .docx).

  3. I will do one full readthrough, leaving comments and suggestions based on our discussion in step 1. I will let you know when I've finished/send back the reviewed file.

  4. You'll review my feedback and ask any clarifying questions.

  5. If you would like me to review any changes you make based on my feedback, track any changes via suggesting/commenting mode. Then, re-send the share link/updated file. I will let you know when I've finished/send back the reviewed file. FYI: I can only do this second readthrough if you use the same document link/file.

  6. You'll review my new feedback and ask any remaining questions. Then we're all set! :D

Auctions run from 8:00AM EST, 25 February 2025, to 8:00PM EST, 1 March 2025. Bids before or after this period are invalid and will not be counted. If you would like to bid on this auction:
