Fanwork Details:
As a beta reader, I can work with you on all aspects of a
story. I enjoy working with authors to make sure their prose is as
clean, clear and vivid as possible, and to make sure that character
development and deeper themes are fully expressed. I am not as helpful
when it comes to complex plots, but I am happy to brainstorm with you
as needed. I always offer encouragement along the way, and if
something is not working, I try to share my observations rather than
prescribing specific solutions.
For translation editing, I am NOT fluent in Chinese, but I am an interested student. I would love to work with someone who is doing a translation project to make sure that the English is as natural and engaging as possible while fully expressing the nuance of the original.
Relevant experience/background:
I have been a fanfic beta reader for over a decade. I've
worked with all levels of writers.
For translation editing, I have to confess that I have no experience, except for being frustrated by terrible subtitles and knowing I could do better :') I am simply very interested in trying out this kind of project. I do have a bachelor's degree in linguistics and have some familiarity with the issues involved in translation as a practice.
Characters/pairings of interest:
In MDZS and TGCF: I am naturally a wangxian and hualian gal
but I am willing to beta for all ships except intergenerational
incest.
in FAM: My favorite ship is probably Karen&Wayne. I love Karen, Tracy, Molly, and Wayne the most, but I am willing to beta for any characters or ships.
Subjects/theme/tropes of interest:
I am open to anything outside of my dnws. Don't be shy about
asking me to beta polyamory, weird smut, crackfic, etc. Omg PLEASE let
me beta your weird smut.
Unwilling to address:
I don't want to work on darkfic but I am okay with dark
topics in context. No graphic torture. No extreme underage sex. I am
open-minded about kinks but do ask before bidding if you have
something that may be on the edge. I generally don't like fics that
focus on intergenerational incest (parents/kids, uncles/nephews),
although some reference to this may be okay depending on context. In general these are not triggers, just yucks.
Other notes:
For beta reading: After I give you a round of commentary,
you don't have to get my "approval" for any changes you make (or opt
not to make), but you are welcome to ask me to look again!
For translation editing, I will want to work with you closely to hone our interpretation of the text.
