Type of fanwork: Fan labor
Subtype(s): Culture picking, Sensitivity reading, Specialist expertise, Research
Fandom(s): Any
Highest rating: E
Minimum Bid: $5
Audience: All ages
Length/scope: For research assistance and specialist expertise questions, the minimum bid is $5. If you are looking for sensitivity reading of your fic, however, I ask that you bid at least $5 per 10k of writing you'd like me to look over (10k would by a $5 minimum, 20k a $10 minimum, and so on)
Special interests (what is this?): Aro/ace characters, Canonically trans or nonbinary chars, Gen (no ship) or platonic works, Trans or nonbinary interpretations of canon characters

Fanwork Details:
Jewish & American culture-picking, sensitivity reading for Jewish, aromantic, asexual, transgender (especially transmasculine), ADHD, autistic, and chronically and mentally ill characters, as well as writing queerplatonic relationships.

Specialist expertise: Archives and archival work, stringed instruments and orchestras, queer history, scientific & medical history, historical research

Relevant experience/background:
I'm an American Jew, aro/ace and transgender, both ADHD and autistic, and manage chronic physical and mental health conditions like POTS and OCD. I should also add that my queerplatonic partner has severe ME/CFS, or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, which I have also become very familiar with.

As far as specialist expertise goes, I'm a grab bag. I've played viola for 16 years; I currently work as an archives assistant in a LGBTQ+ history library & have fairly in-depth knowledge of both archives and queer history; I previously worked in a historical medical library and study the history of science, particularly in Early Modern Europe; I also work for my state's historical society teaching middle and high school students how to do historical research projects, and know of a lot of great research resources that I would love to connect you with as a result!

Additional notes about labor offered:
I do a lot of really in-depth historical research for my own fic (for some particularly relevant examples on Ao3, check out "Go Down to the Netherworld, Plant Grapes," "Stemma Codicum," and "Future Boy") and would love to help you figure out what resources you have access to and how to go about doing solid historical research for media set in other time periods or historical AUs.

I am willing to work with folks writing for any fandom, though if you're looking for a particularly good match, some of my personal favorites include The Locked Tomb, Critical Role, The Owl House, Pentiment, Back to the Future (the movies and musical), Lord of the Rings, Dracula, and Dungeon Meshi.

Subjects/theme/tropes of interest:
Historical fandoms and AUs; trans male characters; stories about disability and mental illness; asexuality, aromanticism, and queerplatonic relationships; whump and hurt/comfort; friendship; the complexity of identity, personhood, and self-discovery; science fiction and fantasy; elaborate worldbuilding, Jewish characters and Judaism.

Unwilling to address:
While I am comfortable offering my services to those writing sex- and romance-centric works, I am very much sex- and romance-averse myself and will not be able to offer very much feedback on those elements.

Relevant experience/background:
Instructor teaching essay writing, including to people who speak English as a second language, ace spectrum, adult-diagnosed ADHD, 7+ years of graduate-level academic research experience

Additional notes about labor offered:
Betaing: if you are very concerned about every comma and semicolon, I may not be the best option, but I am good at working with intelligibility, catching spelling mistakes, and helping the writing flow. I am also available for plot brainstorming and working to create a consistent style (i.e., historical, imitating a certain author, etc)

Culture picking: In addition to general US culture/language services (how does the education system work? Where do USAmericans go for X activity or service? Do you say "cell phone" or "mobile"?), I am happy to work with things like geography and place names for the specific regions listed. I have some experience with history, especially queer history, in the regions listed.

Specialist expertise: In addition to my own experience in academia in the humanities, I have many friends and colleagues in different fields and academic systems. I can talk about the differences between different jobs in various types of institutions, including in different countries.

Research: if you are writing about a specific topic or profession that no one has offered help for, I have lots of experience finding information and have access to academic institutions that have resources not easily available to the public. I specialize in queer history, British and American history, the history and effects of colonialism, and historical literature.

Sensitivity Reading: I am happy to offer feedback on the portrayal of ace characters, including ace or ace spectrum characters who enter romantic or sexual relationships. I am also happy to look for if an ADHD character's thoughts seem realistic, how medication might impact them, what they might do instead of medication, and what the diagnosis process is like. If you want to write realistic head injuries, I can discuss treatment and recovery for minor and moderate concussions. This includes immediate reactions, what kinds of medical professionals are involved, length of recovery, and common related injuries.

Other notes:
I'm happy to work with you on what you want and how I can best help your fic! I enjoy giving constructive (but kind!) feedback on writing to help you feel more confident and excited about your work! I really like sharing the knowledge I have and learning about new experiences, so I'm absolutely here to help you research that niche topic you're writing about. If you have any questions about if what you want help with would be a good fit for my skills, feel free to reach out on tumblr!

Type of fanwork: Fan labor
Subtype(s): Betaing, Line editing, developmental editing, editorial assessment, query letter review
Fandom(s): Any
Highest rating: E
Minimum Bid: $25
Audience: All ages
Length/scope: 10 - 20k words
Special interests (what is this?): Aro/ace characters, Canonically trans or nonbinary chars, F/F ships, Gen (no ship) or platonic works, Poly ships, Trans or nonbinary interpretations of canon characters

Relevant experience/background:
Hi there! I’ve been editing books professionally for fifteen years. I got my start as an editor at HarperCollins with William Morrow and Avon Books before eventually moving to other NYC independent publishers. These days, I work as a literary agent, helping authors prepare and sell projects to publishers, and as a faculty member for Manuscript Academy, a well-regarded and supportive community for up-and-coming authors.

As an editor, I’ve worked on both short- and long-form projects that cross the literary landscape: from erotica to Amish romance and everything in between. I can get down and dirty with some copyediting or keep it high level to help you make sure the plot and characters hang together. Regardless, my true passion lies in helping authors refine their narratives to create compelling stories aimed at catching the eye of readers, agents, and publishers alike.

Additional notes about labor offered:
I can tailor this offering to any of the services I've listed here or even combine a few, say, if you have 20,000 words of a fic ready for editing and a query letter you'd like me to provide feedback on. I'm also willing to have a short video call (15 min) to discuss my editorial suggestions and/or answer any questions you may have about the publishing world. I do ask for patience, especially for longer projects, as it takes time to give complete and insightful feedback on your work (and your work is worth that!)

For betaing and editing, I can be as hands-on as you'd like. If you're looking for a cheer reader - great! If you'd like someone willing to roll up their sleeves and help you hone your craft, say no more. Please just indicate in your offer what level of support you're seeking.

I'm willing to work on any fandom, but if it's one I'm less familiar with, my feedback will be more craft-oriented, technical, and aimed at helping you being a better writer and storyteller.

Please note: Winning this auction does not in any way suggest or guarantee representation by myself or my agency.

Subjects/theme/tropes of interest:
My interests include but are not limited to: non-hetero relationships, poly ships, ace/aro representation, sweet romances, suspense, magical realism, and speculative fiction.

Unwilling to address:
I won't consider projects that include: incest, rape, necrophilia, non-magical beastiality, gratuitous violence, coprophilia (scat play), emetophilia (vomit play).

Other notes:
I look forward to a collaborative relationship with my high bidder to determine how best to complete their project. This could look like the following: me editing/betaing up to 20k words of a project you're working on, a query letter, or synopsis; talking through questions you have about writing, publishing, or a specific project idea you have during a 15 min video call. I can heavily edit your pages or provide you with overarching feedback. Let's make it work for you. :)

Length/scope: 500 words per $5 bid

Fanwork Details:
Culture picking: general American culture, Texas, the Deep South, the U.S. military, the 1980s/1990s. Sensitivity reading: I'm a survivor of intimate partner violence and rape/sexual assault and have done original research on interpersonal violence in an academic and professional capacity. Specialist expertise: I have a doctorate in educational psychology with an emphasis on social psychology, trauma, and attitudes toward survivors; I have firsthand experience as a psychotherapist in a trainee capacity (I was not licensed but did this type of work for five years) and experience with the following: graduate school and other academic settings, empirical social science research, indie music subcultures, knitting and other fiber crafts, and baking; I also have a good base of knowledge on 19th-century literature.

Relevant experience/background:
I have been a professional proofreader at a couple of different jobs. I have a PhD in educational psychology and have received specific training in a wide variety of psychology topics including therapy and assessment. I've done empirical social science research as a graduate student and a professional researcher. I've been an avid participant in a variety of hobbies and activities. I have provided proofreading and localization help in the past to a fansubber who spoke fluent English and Japanese but wasn't a native English speaker and thus needed help avoiding errors and making English dialogue sound realistic and natural.

Additional notes about labor offered:
When I do proofreading, I'm happy to adjust my level of scrutiny to whatever the writer prefers. In other words, I can go over everything with a fine-toothed comb, I can be more selective about what I comment on, or I can focus exclusively on certain things. When offering culture-picking, sensitivity reading, or specialist expertise, if subject matter comes up that I'm not already thoroughly familiar with I'm always happy to consult sources and ask my personal and professional networks for input. In fact, if I have the slightest doubt about something it's my habit to consult sources for confirmation. I do the same kind of background research when providing localization help.

Characters/pairings of interest:
I'm much more flexible when it comes to the characters and pairings I work with when offering fan services than I am when I'm writing original work. Helping others with works that are different from what I usually write and read seems like a good opportunity to expand my horizons.

Subjects/theme/tropes of interest:
See above; I'm open to a wide variety of possibilities.

Unwilling to address:
I prefer not to work on material involving incest, especially incest involving twins. More ambiguous cases in which characters are related by marriage, by adoption later in life, etc. are generally fine. While I actively welcome material involving nonconsensual sexual contact if the creator's intention is to represent such contact sensitively—interpersonal violence is my wheelhouse, after all—I'm not willing to work with material involving unapologetic nonconsensual contact that is endorsed by the implied author of the work—in other words, if the nonconsensual activity seems to be excused, justified, or treated as unimportant by the text.

Other notes:
I enjoy collaboration and value specific requests and feedback. I'm curious by nature and flexible about trying new things as long as I have enough information to do what's needed.

Fanvidder of many years, and former professional video editor! I've also run similar workshops for friends who have gone on to make many great vids.

Additional notes about labor offered:
A workshop over zoom where I'll teach you the basics of how to make a fanvid! We'll be using DaVinci Resolve, a free editing software that you can download for Mac or Windows. (Please note that Resolve requires a pretty decent computer- you won't be able to run it on a phone or tablet. If you have questions about your device, feel free to message me! It's possible to download earlier versions that require a little less computer oomph if necessary.)

We'll cover ideas like getting your visual and audio source, cutting and arranging clips, some very basic effects like fades and zooms, adding text/titles, and exporting and posting your finished vid. If there's anything else you'd particularly like to learn, just let me know!

You can see the kind of vids I make at my AO3. Please note that I don't work with source audio and we won't cover that.

Unwilling to address:
I'm happy to provide source material for this tutorial, but if you want to bring your own source material, I prefer not to work with: horror or thriller media, vomiting, infidelity, glorification of military/police, or discrimination (racism, homophobia, etc) presented uncritically

Other notes:
We won't make a whole vid together, but after the workshop you should have all the skills to continue on your own! And I'm happy to help with any questions that may come up afterward.

Auctions run from 8:00AM EST, 25 February 2025, to 8:00PM EST, 1 March 2025. Bids before or after this period are invalid and will not be counted. If you would like to bid on this auction:

Step 1: Check the bidding spreadsheet to find out what the current high bid is. (Note: It may take up to five minutes for a bid to appear.)

Step 2: Fill out the creator's bidding form with a bid that is higher than the current high bid. If you want to make it harder for someone to outbid you, bid higher! We will NOT notify you if someone outbids you. FTH will only notify you if you are the high bidder after the auctions end.

astriiformes is offering:

Organizations this auction benefits: Disability Law United *, Environmental Integrity Project, Freedom to Read Foundation *, Never Again Action, News Literacy Project * (See full list. * denotes an organization that accepts international donations.)

Type of fanwork: Fan labor
Subtype(s): Betaing, Editing of Chinese-to-English Translations
Fandom(s): MXTX (works): Mo Dao Zu Shi / The Untamed, Tian Guan Ci Fu / Heaven Official's Blessing; For All Mankind; Original Work
Highest rating: E
Minimum Bid: $5
Audience: All ages
Length/scope: 1k words per dollar donated up to 30k/$30. After that, 5k words per $10, so 40k=$50, 100k=$170.
Special interests (what is this?): Ambiguous endings

Fanwork Details:
As a beta reader, I can work with you on all aspects of a story. I enjoy working with authors to make sure their prose is as clean, clear and vivid as possible, and to make sure that character development and deeper themes are fully expressed. I am not as helpful when it comes to complex plots, but I am happy to brainstorm with you as needed. I always offer encouragement along the way, and if something is not working, I try to share my observations rather than prescribing specific solutions.

For translation editing, I am NOT fluent in Chinese, but I am an interested student. I would love to work with someone who is doing a translation project to make sure that the English is as natural and engaging as possible while fully expressing the nuance of the original.

Relevant experience/background:
I have been a fanfic beta reader for over a decade. I've worked with all levels of writers.

For translation editing, I have to confess that I have no experience, except for being frustrated by terrible subtitles and knowing I could do better :') I am simply very interested in trying out this kind of project. I do have a bachelor's degree in linguistics and have some familiarity with the issues involved in translation as a practice.

Characters/pairings of interest:
In MDZS and TGCF: I am naturally a wangxian and hualian gal but I am willing to beta for all ships except intergenerational incest.

in FAM: My favorite ship is probably Karen&Wayne. I love Karen, Tracy, Molly, and Wayne the most, but I am willing to beta for any characters or ships.

Subjects/theme/tropes of interest:
I am open to anything outside of my dnws. Don't be shy about asking me to beta polyamory, weird smut, crackfic, etc. Omg PLEASE let me beta your weird smut.

Unwilling to address:
I don't want to work on darkfic but I am okay with dark topics in context. No graphic torture. No extreme underage sex. I am open-minded about kinks but do ask before bidding if you have something that may be on the edge. I generally don't like fics that focus on intergenerational incest (parents/kids, uncles/nephews), although some reference to this may be okay depending on context. In general these are not triggers, just yucks.

Other notes:
For beta reading: After I give you a round of commentary, you don't have to get my "approval" for any changes you make (or opt not to make), but you are welcome to ask me to look again!

For translation editing, I will want to work with you closely to hone our interpretation of the text.

Type of fanwork: Fan labor
Subtype(s): Betaing, Sensitivity reading, Create/update Fanlore pages, stuff like that
Fandom(s): MXTX (works): Mo Dao Zu Shi / The Untamed, The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System; Arcane; Dimension 20
Highest rating: E
Minimum Bid: $50
Audience: All ages
Length/scope: For Betaing, about 20K max for intense betaing, but I might be willing to help with a longer fic. To create a fanlore page, probably less than 5k, not including quotes.
Special interests (what is this?): Aro/ace characters, F/F ships, Gen (no ship) or platonic works

Fanwork Details:
Culture Picking: I'm an ace lesbian, if you need some feedback on writing either of those.

Betaing: Depends on what you are comfortable with. At minimum I'm happy to edit grammar, but I'm also happy to be a soundboard during drafting, and to offer feedback about structure and other more rewrite-intensive critique, if you are up for that.

Fanlore Pages: I'm happy to create a fanlore page on your choice of subject, or to overhaul an existing one. However, the less I know about the subject, the more I may need to rely on you for guidance and feedback. I.e. if you want me to create a page for one of your fics, you'd need to summarize the fic for me, or for a fandom I don't know, you'd have to point me towards the Big Things to know about the fandom and where I might get first-handed sources to read about it, etc.

Relevant experience/background:
Betaing: I have Beta'd for just. So many people under so many different circumstances. I guess I can give you references if you want? Message me if so.

Fanlore Pages: For previous FTH's, I have overhauled the K-Pop fanlore page (especially the English speaking fandom section), and created the pages for creators Joannalannister and Wafflelate, and for the fics "If You Had This Time Again" and "The Many Gardens of Shikabane-Hime." All of this was more than a year ago so I'm not sure how much others have edited them since, but it should give you an idea at least.

Characters/pairings of interest:
Willing to do anything in these fandoms, but some notes for your consideration:

MXTX Works: I really like QiJiu! I know they're not as popular as the two canon/main pairings, so I want to throw out that they have my love too.

Arcane: I only know a little about wider League Lore, but I'm willing to learn. I especially really like Mel Medarda.

Dimension 20: I haven't seen all seasons, but I'm generally familiar with everything except Shriek Week to an extent

Unwilling to address:
Not super into vore/vomit/piss/poop or extensive blood, like blood play, if you want me to beta some smut. Otherwise, I can't really think of anything that's a hard no for me to beta or create.

Other notes:
Honestly I'm willing to go outside of these fandoms, it's just that I will need to rely more on you/may be less helpful if I'm creating a fanlore page or betaing for a fandom I don't know.

Organizations this auction benefits: Bellingcat *, Congo Leadership Initiative *, Middle East Children's Alliance * (See full list. * denotes an organization that accepts international donations.), Ruhama

Type of fanwork: Fan labor
Subtype(s): Positive Feedback/Commenting/Written Praise!
Fandom(s): Any
Highest rating: E
Minimum Bid: $5
Audience: 18+ only
Length/scope: $5 gives you positive feedback on 2 fics of max combined length of 20k; $10 gives you positive feedback on 4 fics of max combined length 50k; $15 gives you positive feedback on 5 fics of max combined length of 100k. Higher donations of course acceptable - willing to read your entire back catalogue for the right bid!! [Although I retain the right to leave up to five fics out of the posted positive feedback per additional 20 fics!]
Special interests (what is this?): Aro/ace characters, F/F ships, Gen (no ship) or platonic works, Genderswap/genderbending, Trans or nonbinary interpretations of canon characters

Relevant experience/background:
I leave some form of positive feedback on 90% of fics I read

Additional notes about labor offered:
Do you have a fic that you felt was epic but didn't get the amount of love you felt it deserved? I know you do - we all do!!! Give me a list of say 3-7 fics, and I'll read 2-5 of them (depending on lengths and donation amount but we can discuss!) and leave some love notes on each one! Depending on the vibe (mine at the time of reading) you may recieve chapter by chapter reactions to a chaptered fic; a read-a-long reaction style commentary with quotes and literary gushing on tumblr or bluesky; a comment at the end of your chaptered fic/one shot with quotes and lines that I loved or moments that made me emote; or a mixture of all above! I do this organically anyway - and I have been known to make fan fic promotion posts of fics that really gave me visual inspo!! Who knows what sort of delicious comments could drop into your AO3 inbox!!

Characters/pairings of interest:
At the moment, I enjoy reading gen Harry Potter fics, particularly ones focusing on The Black Family (antics, I simply enjoy their antics). But that's not at all an exclusive focus. I read extensively in Harry Potter, NCT, Seventeen, Inception, The Untamed, Word of Honor, Star Wars (prequel trilogy), Marvel, EXO, BTS, Shinee, Good Omens, probably a dozen other smaller fandoms that I have forgotten. I also read in a lot of fandoms that I know nothing about (eyes on you BTS), so don't worry.

Subjects/theme/tropes of interest:
I read a lot, but I enjoy fics that involve worldbuilding, kink (particularly intrigued by non-sexual kink although I do read the regular type), omegaverses that are safe, sane and consensual, HP specifically I like culture and history focuses, ones that explore how different a magical world would be! Kpop wise, I enjoy a good canon fic with a twist, but equally like a fantasy AU. Honestly, please browse my bookmarks on AO3 if you are unsure if I would be interested in your writing - I have many bookmarks. Happy to chat if you are unsure!! I read a lot so I probably will enjoy reading your writing!

Unwilling to address:
Power imbalance (including but not limited to teacher/student, coach/athlete, boss/employee, etc [in ships: snape/students, sirius/child, etc]), rape or SA, headaches - ESPECIALLY if they are linked with any form of brain related illness, illness more serious than say hay fever or a cold, illnesses that begin with benign symptoms but become serious, students being attracted to teachers/tas/professors or vice versa unless it's super jokey, rape fantasy/roleplay, consensual non con, non con, BDSM that isn't well set up eg. No safewords or no hint of off screen negotiations (off screen negotiations are g so long as it's clear they happened), serious weather events eg typhoons/cyclones/tsunamis, intense violence (okay if its a scene in a larger fic but not if it is the entire fic). kpop specific: speculation about irl idol illnesses.

Other notes:
I'm a chatty person! So if there are things you'd like me to comment on (eg. Characters or WOrldbuilding - maybe you want me to ask exploratory questions!) just say so. I'll keep a dialogue open so we can chat, and if at any point I say something that you're unsure how to take just say! I will never mean anything critically.

Relevant experience/background:
I have 4 years of experience in Audacity editing a remotely recorded multi-track podcast, and 2 years of experience recording and editing podfics.

Additional notes about labor offered:
I will work with you to take your recorded podfic and edit it, removing background noise, and taking out miscellaneous mouth noises. I'll also review and remove any re-reads of lines.

I am also happy to adjust the pitch up or down if you prefer a different tone to your own voice.

If you have no experience of recording podfics, I can also give tips and tricks I've found to help you get the best sound out of non-professional microphones.

Unwilling to address:
I won't work on podfics featuring Rape/Noncon, Underage Sex, or Graphic Descriptions of Violence for this prize, even if they are not tagged in the archive warnings.

Other notes:
For this auction, I'll edit your podfic recording that is either your work, or the work of someone who has given permission to be podficced. You will have to provide me a link to the work, and if the author does not have a permission statement on their profile, you'll have to include a link to where they gave permission.

You will receive an mp3 and a wav file of your edited podfic for uploading wherever you choose to host it.

Type of fanwork: Fan labor
Subtype(s): Betaing, Translation, Historical research
Fandom(s): A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones/House of the Dragon; Avatar The Last Airbender; Grishaverse
Highest rating: M
Minimum Bid: $10
Audience: 18+ only
Length/scope: 10 - 20k words
Special interests (what is this?): Ambiguous endings, Gen (no ship) or platonic works, Genderswap/genderbending, Nonwhite characters' racial or cultural experiences, Racebending, Unhappy endings

Fanwork Details:
Betaing: Plot development, characterization, alpha reading, story beats, dialogue.

Translation: Basic translation to Classical Latin.

Historical research: Initially, I can help research historical topics (e.g. food that a medieval peasant might have eaten) for fic purposes. My ultimate goal will be to help the writer develop their own research methodology and ways to find information, so they can do their own research in the long term.

Relevant experience/background:
Although I haven’t formally betaed fanfics, I have participated extensively in critique exchanges for original writing, both giving and receiving. I self-edit all of my current fanfics (see my HOTD fanfics on AO3), which should showcase my ability to edit for plot, characterization, SPAG, etc.

I have a degree in Classical Studies and am an amateur historian, with an extensive personal library of historical nonfiction books.

Additional notes about labor offered:
Historical research: Although in the beginning I am happy to help track down specific questions the writer may have, I am not the writer’s long-term personal research assistant. If I feel like the writer is relying too heavily on me without attempting to do their own research, I will gently push back and steer them toward honing their research skills. But I am a history nerd, so I will be happy to dig into interesting questions for the sake of learning!

Characters/pairings of interest:
ASOIAF: Prefer HOTD characters

ATLA: Prefer Zuko, Katara, Zutara

Grishaverse: Prefer Darklina

Unwilling to address:
Character bashing, gratuitous violence/gore, explicit sexual content, extreme underage/adult relationships, mommy/daddy kink, parent/child incest, bestiality, kinks involving bodily fluids that aren’t ejaculates.

You can contact me first to ask if I’m OK with certain kinks or dark topics.

Other notes:
I want to help the writer improve their fic according to their vision. My style of giving feedback is forthright, so if you prefer a softer touch, make that clear upfront!

We can chat in DMs about expectations. Then I can read your most recent draft. You can include comments in the document with research/translation questions and where you want me to focus.

After I finish reading the draft, I will include comments, suggestions, and questions. I will try to answer research/translation question and include source materials/suggestions where you can do additional research on their own. You are welcome to ask follow-up questions.

I can do a second round of feedback, which works the same way as the first, after you have revised. However, you must send the second draft by Oct 31 or I can’t guarantee I’ll send my second round of feedback by Dec 31.
