ADHD, 7+ years of graduate-level academic research experience
Additional notes about labor offered:
Betaing: if you are very concerned about every comma and
semicolon, I may not be the best option, but I am good at working with
intelligibility, catching spelling mistakes, and helping the writing
flow. I am also available for plot brainstorming and working to create
a consistent style (i.e., historical, imitating a certain author, etc)
Culture picking: In addition to general US culture/language services (how does the education system work? Where do USAmericans go for X activity or service? Do you say "cell phone" or "mobile"?), I am happy to work with things like geography and place names for the specific regions listed. This includes where people travel, what they call their methods of transportation, where would it make sense for a certain person to live/work/etc. I can also check regional dialects and customs for accuracy. I have some experience with history, especially queer history, in the regions listed.
Specialist expertise: In addition to my own experience in academia in the humanities, I have many friends and colleagues in different fields and academic systems. I can talk about what the advertised and actual paths are for different disciplines, as well as what day to day life looks like for a graduate student, PhD student, and professor. I can talk about the differences between different jobs in various types of institutions, including in different countries.
Research: if you are writing about a specific topic or profession that no one has offered help for, I have lots of experience finding information and have access to academic institutions that have resources not easily available to the public. I specialize in queer history, British and American history, the history and effects of colonialism, and historical literature.
Sensitivity Reading: I am happy to offer feedback on the portrayal of ace characters, including ace or ace spectrum characters who enter romantic or sexual relationships. I am also happy to look for if an ADHD character's thoughts seem realistic, how medication might impact them, what they might do instead of medication, and what the diagnosis process is like. If you want to write realistic head injuries, I can discuss treatment and recovery for minor and moderate concussions. This includes immediate reactions, what kinds of medical professionals are involved, length of recovery, and common related injuries.
Subjects/theme/tropes of interest:
Some themes and subjects that I feel especially excited or
qualified to advise on include:
Historical fics or historically-inspired writing, non-linear or
non-traditional narrative styles, culture/geography/experiences of the
Southeastern United States, and USAmerican high school and university
culture, Regency England, queer characters in historical contexts,
found family, strange AUs, character studies, intergenerational
friendships
Unwilling to address:
RPF, incest, Mpreg, A/B/O, teacher/student (of any age or
level of education), underage sex, significant age gaps, noncon or
dubcon, dark versions of any character, self harm/suicide, cheating,
domestic abuse, blood, piss, shit, vomit, or breast milk during sex,
violent sex, violent bigotry of any kind
Billy Hargvrove/Steve Harrington (Stranger Things), Booker/Nile (The Old Guard), Kylo Ren/Rey (Star Wars) Any version of Sherlock Holmes in any kind of sexual relationship Any positive portrayals of Billy Hargrove or Kylo Ren
Other notes:
I'm happy to work with you on what you want and how I can
best help your fic! I enjoy giving constructive (but kind!) feedback
on writing to help you feel more confident and excited about your
work! I really like sharing the knowledge I have and learning about
new experiences, so I'm absolutely here to help you research that
niche topic you're writing about. If you have any questions about if
what you want help with would be a good fit for my skills, feel free
to reach out on tumblr!
